Being vaccinated as a kid, I never questioned the importance of vaccinating my own children until recently.  Someone from a homeschool group I joined posed the question of whether to vaccinate or not and I began thinking on this.  The conclusion I’ve come to…

I just don’t know.

So far none of my kids have had issues but I have two nephews who have been diagnosed as autistic and both have been immunized.  Some believe there is a link in the rise of autism cases and the number of required immunizations today (particularly the ones still containing mercury).  Apparently there are cases of immunization related issues because we have a National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) and we have to sign a release just to get them administered.

I just don’t know.

Some “experts” claim those who don’t immunize are “neglectful” parents.  They claim that studies show immunizations to be “worth the risk”.  It’s said that the benefits far outweigh any low incidence of reaction.  Not sure that’s very comforting to the parent of the few who are affected though.  I even read documents that said the claims of vaccines causing SIDS, Autism and other things are myths generated by emotional parents.

I just don’t know.

If you’d like to scare yourself either way, just do a google search on vaccinations.  Both views are enough to frighten a parent to that particular side.  When it comes right down to it, parents need to make an informed decision.  Maybe vaccines aren’t best for every child and families with a history of reactions for instance, should really do their homework before deciding either way.  Ultimately though, it won’t be the government “living with” the decision we make.  So, do some research and then heed the advice given another lady in the homeschool group.  She said “in the end, pray over it and ask God for guidance, and don't make a decision out of fear.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

~2 Timothy 1:7

After all, He created these bodies of ours and knows best what decision is right for our individual kids.
