When I saw that they would divide them into teams of guys vs gals I wasn't thrilled. Survivor did that and it really was one of their worst seasons but that wasn't the real reason I didn't care for the idea in this situation. It's been my experience that typically men lose faster than women and I don't just mean actual pounds, I mean percentages of their weight.
Well, for the last three weeks in a row the gals have lost the weigh in to the guys. It's really not surprising. What I find so terribly wrong about this is that the women somehow feel they must be doing something wrong when I'm not convinced they are. Unless the guys just start pigging out and stop exercising, I don't see the women pulling a win next week. It seems they'll be combining the teams anyway and I guess so since pretty soon they would have no women left on the show lol. I'm not really even sure that a woman has a chance of winning the title of The Biggest Loser what with our lack of testosterone and all. I mean physically speaking women typically have higher body fat percentages than men (even if both are at their ideal weight). This doesn't mean they aren't in as good a shape. I mean look at what happened with Mark and Andrea during the challenge. She lapped him twice! And yet, he's been dropping several times the amount of weight she is each week.
So is it fair to pit the men against the women in this sort of show? I'm not sure it is. Granted it appears that many of the participants this season voted off are turning their lives upside down for the better when they get home, so I suppose there is something to “gain” from doing the show at all. I just wonder if by comparing the two genders we aren't adding to the discouragement of women everywhere dealing with being over weight. The gals on the show are upset with themselves each week through no fault of their own. I think this creates a potential of obsessive compulsive behavior. Of course there are doctors (of all kinds lol) keeping tabs on these folks, the physical and emotional battles they're dealing with are big. I mean when someone can be upset because they “only” dropped four pounds in a week....well, where's the “reality” in that?
I have no idea how it's humanly possible to drop high double digits in a week but somehow they're doing that. I haven't got time to work out for four and five hours a day and food doesn't magically appear in my kitchen either. So, I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with my measly little one and two pound weeks and somehow try not to compare how I'm doing with what I see these people pulling off week after week. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy these people are transforming themselves. I just hope they can keep perspective on what truly is “reality” when they go home.
