I made the mistake of starting with the very liberal WashingtonPost article on this monumental story. Most who are honest can admit that the Post clearly leans grossly to the left. So much so that I'm uncertain they can really ever claim to be completely unbiased. Obviously they praised O'Connor despite her somewhat “fence riding” reputation.
I'm not quite sure how she could truly be classified as a “Moderate Conservative”. It appears that on many of the really big issues she has sided with the liberals almost exclusively. Obviously her departure from the court is a big deal to both Conservatives and Liberals. For Liberals, it's frightening as the likelihood that they will be losing ground is great. For Conservatives, it's hopeful that they could be gaining ground.
But what about families? Do some of these Justices really take into account how their rulings affect our families? Do they understand how misinterpretations of the constitution obliterate ethics and promote agendas that are far from what's best for our country?
While I admire O'Connor for bridging the gender gap to become the first female Justice, I am quite disappointed by her performance while there. Her voting record doesn't align with my beliefs at all and quite frankly, I'm glad she's retiring. I do extend my heartfelt prayers for her husband who, it's reported, is suffering from Alzheimer's and the main reason for her surprising announcement. At the same time, I hope her “moderate” vote can be replaced with one that is more on the conservative side. Unfortunately, the democrats don't want a conservative on the bench and will likely cause trouble over whomever the President appoints.
It should be interesting to see how this all plays out. For me, I'll be praying about the matter over the next few months.
