High Electric Bill... Unavoidable?

My thermostat is generally set to 78° in the summer.  The house is still somewhat warm (low 80's) and yet the AC runs much of the day.  Our electric bills are outrageous right now.  So today I thought, maybe if I raise the thermostat the AC will run less and therefore lower my bill.

I raised it to 80° and waited.  About 30 minutes later the AC switched on and ran and ran and ran just to maintain 80°.  So I upped it to 83° just to stop it.  Another 30 minutes go by and the thing comes back on and is still running to keep the back of the house between 83 and 84°.  Meanwhile the temperature gauge in the front room is reading almost 90°.  I was in there doing bills and sorting through school stuff when I realized I was sweating badly despite having a ceiling fan and floor fan blowing on me.

I'm now in my bedroom with all the shades drawn sitting in the dark under the ceiling fan and it's “ok” temp wise.  The kids rooms stay the coolest and that's where they are at the moment having quiet time.  I guess my choices are, pay outrageous prices to sweat anyway, or pay outrageous prices to be “ok”.  I don't remember when we had rain last but it's been a while and today is supposed to be another triple digit day.

This is all just parr for the course here though.  I would describe our year round weather as usually hot or not as hot with a few days mixed in here and there that resemble winter, spring & fall.  You generally don't know when to expect those surprise days but you can almost always bet that the weather forecast will be wrong - especially when they try to predict anything other than “heat waves”.
