The last few days we’ve enjoyed much cooler temperatures than we Texas transplants are accustomed to. When we have days like this I like to open the windows and doors and let the cool air permeate the entire house. The only problem is, we don't have screens on all of the windows here (we’re renting). Today, as I studied the Word I kept hearing an irritating little buzzing behind me. I turned to see, with reckless abandon, a common house fly determined to go through the window pane. He would fly right into it over and over again. Then he’d land on it (catching his breath I imagined) and seconds later he would be flitting into it all over again. I shook my head, if he would fly back away from there, he might see the big open window only a few feet to his left. Through that window lay freedom…the great outdoors. I wondered if his fate might be that of his fallen comrade that now lay petrified on his back on another nearby sill - he too only a few feet from freedom.
I looked at the open window and then back at the closed one. “Hmm, am I like that fly, God?” I asked and then wondered, “Are most believers like that fly?” The best path for the insect would be through the open one. I can see it but no amount of trying to steer the fly toward that window seems to matter. He doesn’t trust me to lead him the right way. And so, he keeps going in the direction that he thinks must be right. He can see where he wants to be, why can’t he reach it? The believer can see a more intimate relationship with the Father in others, why can’t he have it.
That fly is awfully busy but he’s busy about the wrong business. With his nose pressed against the glass he can’t possibly see the bigger picture. He’ll die, worn out and frustrated but no doubt no one will argue that he didn’t work hard. Are we working ourselves into a spiritual window pane? Going through the same “godly” motions but wondering why on earth we can’t seem to “fly” like other believers? The fly can “see” where he wants to go. He even has the ability to get there….but not without the right direction. We as believers are equipped to have an intimate relationship with Christ. We have everything we need to grow spiritually in Christ..but for some reason, we settle for just a view through a window until we die. Why is that?
