Our family made the journey to Waxahachie, Texas yesterday to witness the magic of old world Bethlehem. Bundled from head to toe, we made our way through the city stopping at shops and such to learn about the people of Jesus' day. The kids were wide-eyed when the camels moved through the city with the wisemen. Sheep milled around a fire while shepherds warmed themselves. We watched “merchants” dye wool and the blacksmith made coins for the children (a widow’s mite) to bring home.
The volunteers were in character as they told about their trade. They even quizzed the kids about their dress and where they were from – acting as though it was all so foreign to them lol. Lee was very interested in the temple and when we entered we were met by a rabbi. This man was so kind and told us about some of the things used in the temple. Finally we made our way to the infamous stable where the nativity was located. Even though it was a reenactment, it was quite moving. So simple. Ann was excited and her mouth gaped open in amazement. Kate just stood quietly taking it all in. We were even surprised that Jewel did as well as she did. After over an hour we began to feel quite cold and sought shelter.
We made our way into the nearby church where we sat surrounded by the sounds of a bell choir. We sang a verse of Silent Night which seemed a fitting end to the evening. The kids woke talking about how much they enjoyed last night’s excursion and all agreed this should be an annual thing. If you’re ever in the Waxahachie area the first two weekends in December, be sure to check out Bethlehem Revisited.
