My Blog: Skin

Posted on Thursday, June 08, 2006 7:43 AM

Yesterday I posted about The Audience of this blog.  Today I'd like to get down to the "curb appeal" side of things...

The Skin
When I first began blogging I picked a generic skin that I thought other's wouldn't pick.  It was rather dull and dark and "mysterious".  I was trying to break away from the "message board" scene and move to a venue where I could write whatever I wanted without having to be so "politically correct".  I liked the original skin because it made me think of "hiding" which fit at the time.  I wasn't sure I wanted people to read what I wrote lol.  As I began to have more and more fun writing, I started working on a new design that was all mine.  Things I had in mind while working up the design for my Scribbles Skin were:

soothing

fun

personal motivation

less is more

I wanted colors that were soothing to look at (at least to me anyway).  I cannot tell you the name of my main color because I played with the hues until I came up with one I really liked.  From there I decided I needed some "complimentary" colors so I went with grey, black, white and gold.  You'll notice that I rarely stray from that color scheme.  Why?  Because I like things to coordinate.  I don't typically want graphics to jump out at you when you come here, I want the overall view to sink in.  I had a gal tell me the other day that she hadn't even noticed my blog header before - now that's blending!  I personally find that soothing - others may think it's boring lol.

The scribbles on the left are all about fun.  I'm not a "pink girl" - never have been into pink...or lace for that matter - ack!  I'm not into frilly either but those scribbles, they represent the type of organized chaos I find appealing.

I didn't even think twice about putting a photo of myself up there, it's a personal touch that puts a face with the words.  Choosing the picture was hard though.  That picture was taken at my goal weight.  So why did I choose it?  It really was as a motivator for myself.  I figured if I looked my thinner self in the eye every time I posted I'd be reminded of my goals.  I have bangs now lol and my face is a little more round.  I'll probably take a new one soon.

I am incredibly picky about what I put on my blog.  I'm not sure what else I can say about that except maybe "less is more" to me.  I also don't add links simply because they've added me to their side bar and I don't add them so they will either.  It takes a while of me reading a blog before I'll add it to the list.  I do feel somewhat responsible for the links I provide on my blog and I want to make sure they are something I can recommend in good conscience.  Everyone has their own philosophy about this and I think it's pretty much a personal preference thing.

The overall look of my blog from fonts to graphics to color choices is very important to me.  I have a vision for it and it needs to reflect that vision for me to be happy with it (remember I'm a big factor in my "audience" lol).  And yes, I do the graphics (as though that's not obvious).  I'd like to take some graphic design classes at some point to improve my skills.  A girl's gotta have skills ya know ;)

So there you have it, the skin of my Scribblings.  Tomorrow I plan to post on The Comments.

I LOVE the look of your blog. The colors, the curly-Q's down the sides, the fonts in your sidebar titles, your photo at the top...The whole thing is full of personality.

You done good, my friend. I do enjoy coming here and it's not all about the looks, either.

We'll update my skin soon enough....I think most of my readers (the two I have) use an aggregator anyway and never actually visit the site.

However, I love yours and its all you! Unique just as God made you. ;-)

Awe man Carol - thanks girl! You're so sweet - gosh darn it - you made me smile today (and I've had a nasty headache living in a hotel room with 4 kids - woohoo).

Janna - you girl are one of the treasures I discovered through the LBY study. Your blog is perfectly titled - just enough of the Word to make you crave some more - love it! You do have skills - you just keep writing those words of wisdom.

Hey gorgeous Erik, the light of my life - You have more than two readers silly :o) And I don't use an aggregator to visit your site because I want to see your smiling face. Just call me "Uniqua" right lol (if you watch Backyardigans you'll get it).

Your blog has always looked so professional to me...I like it! The mirror image is wonderful!

You've inspired me to maybe think of a more simple blog 'look' for mine. Im very picky though, it could take a while. =)

Thanks
Christie

Thanks for sharing all the background to your blog look. I've always felt relaxed when I come here -- the purplish color and swirlies are so soothing -- and I love your tag line: wife, mother, teacher, aspiring writer -- I immediately thought, "me too!"

Someday when your kids are older and you have more time, you could design for others. It's a true gift. It's more than learning the techno skills -- you have an eye for it.

Hang in there with all your kids in that hotel room! :)

((HUGS)) right back atcha Janna :o)

Oh Christie, thank you so much! There's nothing wrong with being picky lol - I'm one of the pickiest ;o) I'm about to pop over to your spot for a bit...

Heather, I think "me too" almost every time I visit your blog, we're related, I just know it - I'm so glad "relaxing" is coming across here lol. The swirlies don't put you in a trance or anything do they? tee hee. I have done some projects for others but it's very time consuming so that's rare. Thank you for your sweet words. We're surviving so far, it's an adventure right!

I echo the others . . . your blog has always had a professional feel to it. And I like it a lot. I also admire/enjoy the extra graphics you use for different things. It really does tie your blog together for a very neat/tight feel.

I like your blog skin a lot. I knew that you had desgined it yourself and I stand in awe of that. I think blue is a very calming color myself.
I am not sure why I have picked the design I have on mine - but the little stinged creature in the upper corner reminds me every single day that I am a sinner and that only God can get those things out of me.
Regarding linkage? Well, at first I wanted that everyone I had linked to see my link in their sidebar too. But not any longer. I link to people how I personally visit and if they don't have me linked - well that is their choice - after all - it is their blog :).
Thank you for sharing a little more about your skin...
