My Blog: Audience

Posted on Wednesday, June 07, 2006 8:05 AM

Yesterday I posted about The Purpose of this blog.  Today I'd like to get personal about YOU...

The Audience
Every blog has an audience, even the unpublished ones are viewed, if only by their writer.  When I'm blogging I keep the audience in mind about as much as I do the purpose.  I realize that because my scribblings are published on the WWW, anyone can read what I write.  Because my audience could be anyone, it does often influence what I am willing to share and what I am not.  At the same time, even before I consider the "anyone" audience these are who I consider above all else when I post:

God

husband

myself

I'm sure some of you are surprised by this list and some aren't.  God is the most important relationship in my life...period.  I want this blog to reflect that and therefore I write primarily for God.  The second most important relationship in my life is my husband.  I care what he thinks more than anyone on this earth.  I know he reads my blog and will hold me accountable for what I say.  I never want to bring him embarrassment, and you won't find any husband bashing here.

You may wonder why I listed myself, it's really very simple.  I don't want to be anyone else.  I want to be true to who I am.  I often read a post numerous times before finally putting it out there.  Partly because I am using this as "writing practice" (as mentioned in my purpose) and partly because I want to make sure it says exactly what I mean...no more, no less.  I want this blog to reflect my individuality.

Because I know all sorts of people visit this blog, I do try to keep that in mind.  At the same time, I am more concerned with pleasing the first three on that list than I am the general public.  There's a saying that "you can't please all of the people, all of the time" so I don't even try (sorry).  I do have a desire to reach out to other women and let them know they "are not alone".  I want to encourage them to go for their goals.  Some people are going to like what I have to say, others are not - that's just how it is.  Of course I hope more will like it than won't but as you can see by my purpose, being liked isn't my goal lol.   I'm not out to win a popularity contest so I really pose no threat to the bloggers who are into that sort of scene lol.  I do not gear my blog toward men and while I have had men contact me via email, I don't reply (sorry fellas).  I am of the same conviction as Leann in that I don't feel it is appropriate for me to cultivate online relationships with men.

Like anyone else, I enjoy having guests and I thank you all for your time.  I know time is one of the most valuable things we have.  I hope you get something out of your visit should you choose to spend time at Scribblings.  When you come here, I want it to be because you want to, not because you feel obligated in any way.

So there you have it, the audience of my Scribblings.  Tomorrow I plan to post on The Skin.

Thank you so much for this! It really made me stop and think about my own audience and who I am trying to please. If God isn't pleased, what's the point, right?

And thanks for participating in the 7 Days! I am really learning a lot from others' perspectives on blogging.

This is a wonderful post, Blair. That's the first thing I learned when I took a magazine writing course -- to focus on the audience. You can take the same topic and slant it hundreds of ways to reach different audiences. Since your priorities are lined up God, Husband, Yourself, you can keep your focus on what matters most to these very important audiences!

I know God has great things in store for you as a writer! One of my favorite magazines is called Christian Communicator. The editor, Reg Forder, signs his columns every month with the same phrase, "Always write for Him." Wise advice for us all!

A lovely post Blair. Thanks for sharing. God has called each of uniquely to Him. And in that our purpose may be a bit different. I enjoy reading how others think through these ideas and find their purpose in Him.

Hey again Carol lol - exactly, if God isn't pleased, it's just fluff 'n' stuff lol. I'm enjoying the blogging about blogging too, and have enjoyed most of the other posts as well!

Heather dahling - you are too precious for words :o) I so appreciate your thoughts and value your opinion like you would not believe. Love that Forder quote! Wise advice indeed!

Hello there Spunky - Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. He has called us each uniquely for sure. Isn't it great that He didn't create us all little carbon copies of one another?
